How to Connect a Custom Domain to a Framer Site (DNS Steps)
Connect a custom domain to Framer step by step: plan needed, exact A and CNAME records, subdomains, the free Hover domain, and invalid DNS fixes.
Short answer: Upgrade the site to a paid Framer plan, go to Site Settings, then Hosting, then Domains, and choose “Connect a domain you own.” For a root domain like example.com, add two A records pointing to 31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6 and a www CNAME pointing to sites.framer.app at your registrar, and remove any other A or AAAA records. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours, though it is usually faster.
Those values come from Framer’s custom domain help article, which I checked on October 11, 2026. If Framer’s settings panel shows different records for your site, use the ones in the panel.
Before you start
You need three things:
- A published Framer site. Click Publish in the top-right corner of the editor first.
- A paid plan on that site. Framer’s pricing page says that to connect a custom domain you need to upgrade to a paid plan. Basic was $10 per month billed yearly on October 11, 2026.
- A domain, and access to its DNS settings. This is usually your registrar’s dashboard, for example Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap or Porkbun.

Option A: Claim the free domain with a yearly plan
If you pay yearly, Framer lets you claim one domain for free through its partner Hover. In the Domains section, choose “Claim a free custom domain,” and Hover connects it to your site automatically.
The fine print from Framer’s help article:
- It can be redeemed once per subscription.
- It is only for sites on a yearly plan.
- The domain renews automatically at the standard rate.
- Redeeming it forfeits the option to request a refund.
- The domain is managed through Hover.
That refund point is worth thinking about. If you are not sure you will keep Framer, buy the domain yourself and use Option B.
Option B: Connect a domain you own
Step 1: Start the connection in Framer
Open your project, go to Site Settings, then Hosting, then Domains, and select “Connect a domain you own.” Enter your domain. Framer then shows the DNS records it needs.
Step 2: Check for automatic setup
Framer supports Domain Connect, an open standard that lets it set records for you at some providers. Framer’s Domain Connect update said it supported Google Domains, GoDaddy and IONOS at the time, with more to follow. If you see an Auto Connect button, click it, review the changes at your provider and apply them. If not, carry on with the manual steps.
Step 3: Add the records for a root domain
For a root, or apex, domain such as example.com, add these at your registrar:
| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
| @ (or blank) | A | 31.43.160.6 |
| @ (or blank) | A | 31.43.161.6 |
| www | CNAME | sites.framer.app |
The root records are often written as “@” or left blank, depending on your registrar. Framer’s article notes these are anycast IP addresses served from locations worldwide.
Step 4: Remove conflicting records
This is the step people miss. Framer says to make sure there are no other A or AAAA records for the domain, because they can interfere. Some registrars add a default “parking” A record when you buy a domain. Delete it.
Step 5: Wait, then check
Framer says DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide, though the process is typically faster. Once it is done, your site loads on your domain and Framer shows the domain as connected.
Connecting a subdomain instead
If you want the Framer site on a subdomain, such as portfolio.example.com, you only need one record:
| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
| portfolio | CNAME | sites.framer.app |
Framer notes that some providers require a trailing dot, written as sites.framer.app. with a period at the end. Some want the full subdomain in the Name field and some want only the first part. If one form does not save, try the other.
This is a good option when your main domain already runs something else, like a shop.
Troubleshooting
The domain shows as pending or invalid
Usually one of these:
- An old A or AAAA record is still there. Remove every A and AAAA record on the root except Framer’s two.
- The www CNAME is missing. Framer’s proxy migration article notes that Framer’s DNS check looks for a CNAME on www, so you may see “Invalid DNS” without it.
- Propagation has not finished. Give it more time, up to 48 hours.
The site loads but HTTPS does not work
The same proxy migration article says to make sure your CAA records are correct so Framer can issue TLS certificates for your domain. If your registrar has CAA records you did not set, check them or remove them.
I connected my domain to Framer years ago
Framer introduced new IP addresses for custom domains. Its improved hosting article says to add the new A records, 31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6, check that they appear globally, and then remove the old ones, 52.223.52.2 and 35.71.142.77. The site stays accessible during the switch.
I am using Cloudflare
Cloudflare is listed by Framer as a supported registrar with its own guide linked from the help article. Add the same records in Cloudflare’s DNS tab.
How to check your records yourself
You do not have to guess whether DNS has updated. On a Mac or Linux terminal, run:
dig +short example.com A
dig +short www.example.com CNAME
On Windows, use nslookup example.com. The first command should return only 31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6. The second should return sites.framer.app. If you see any other IP address, an old record is still active. Framer’s improved hosting article also suggests a web tool such as DNS Checker to confirm the records appear in all regions.
After the domain is live
- Open both versions. Visit example.com and www.example.com and confirm both load your Framer site.
- Update links everywhere. Your email signature, social profiles and marketplace profiles.
- Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Redirect old URLs if you moved from another site. Framer lists site redirects on the Pro plan.

FAQ
Do I need a paid plan to use a custom domain on Framer?
Yes. Framer’s pricing page says you need to upgrade to a paid plan to connect a custom domain. Free sites use a Framer subdomain.
What DNS records does Framer need?
For a root domain, two A records with the values 31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6, and a www CNAME to sites.framer.app. For a subdomain, one CNAME to sites.framer.app.
How long does it take for a Framer custom domain to work?
Framer says DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide, though it is typically faster.
Why does Framer say my DNS is invalid?
The most common causes are an extra A or AAAA record on the root, a missing www CNAME, or changes that have not propagated yet.
Can I get a free domain with Framer?
Yes, with a yearly plan. You can claim one domain through Hover, but redeeming it removes the option to request a refund.
